Ms. Smith has litigated complex commercial disputes over the last 28 years. She has (a) litigated claims involving various broker dealers, (b) represented employers and employees in employment discrimination disputes, (c) defended approximately 20 members of a board of directors in numerous federal civil suits (including three class actions), bankruptcy proceedings, and related criminal investigations arising out of the then largest not-for-profit bankruptcy in U.S. history, (d) defended a minority shareholder in an action to recover damages allegedly resulting from a failed acquisition of the company, and (e) litigated a breach of contract action, implicating federal law under the Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act of 1978, through a three week arbitration. Her practice naturally extends to appellate matters; she has briefed and argued appeals through the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, as well as briefed appeals in various federal circuit courts. Most recently, she served as in-house counsel, acting as the legal liaison between the U.S. interests of a real estate development company and the company’s interests in India. Ms. Smith has served as an arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association, FINRA, the Allegheny County courts, and is a trained mediator. She has received an “AV” Peer Review Rating, the highest rating awarded to attorneys by Martindale-Hubbell.
